Have a great weekend!   U.S. probes release of arrested immigrant in first challenge to sanctuary cities   REUTERS/Daniel Cole/File Photo The DOJ is probing the release by an upstate New York sheriff's office of an immigrant living in the U.S. illegally, in what appears to be its first use of a new policy to target state and local agencies that do not comply with President Donald Trump's directives. The department last week directed federal prosecutors to consider criminal investigations of state and local officials if they interfere with federal immigration enforcement, in a crackdown on "sanctuary cities." Trump issued a range of executive orders after taking office Jan. 20 that aim to clamp down on illegal immigration. Circuit courts… The 1st Circuit restored a U.S. agency rule restricting lobster and Jonah crab fishing off the Massachusetts coast to protect endangered whales, rejecting a claim that the agency did not deserve deference under a recent landmark Supreme Court case … Citigroup won an appeal at the 4th Circuit against military personnel over credit card rates … The 5th Circuit held that a decades-old ban on federally licensed firearms dealers selling handguns to adults under the age of 21 is unconstitutional … And the same court tossed out Biden-era rules designed to protect car buyers. The legal industry… Prominent former U.S. Supreme Court attorney Tom Goldstein pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he failed to report millions of dollars in poker winnings and used his former law firm's accounts to pay his gambling debts … The Nevada Supreme Court rejected Uber's bid to cap lawyer fees … Law firms clashed over clients in the $2.8 billion Blue Cross settlement … The alternative legal services market reached $28.5 billion … Trump's hiring freeze leaves thousands of law students out in the cold … And Doug Emhoff landed at Willkie.
