Brisk China activity sets the mood

By Ankur Banerjee, Asia Finance & Markets Breaking News Correspondent   Wednesday, March 1, 2023 After a tentative start to the month, markets in Asia got a jolt from China's  manufacturing activity  which expanded at the fastest pace in more than a decade in February, and the exuberant mood is likely to seep through to European markets.   The MSCI Asia ex-Japan index was pinned near two-month lows at the start of the day before spiking up 1.4%, and was on track for its best day in nearly two months after China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index for February surged to 52.6, up from 50.1 in January. February was a bad month for Asian stocks, but investors are hoping for better in March -- assuming 'good news is good news' on the data front By Jamie McGeever, Columnist, Global Finance & Markets   Wednesday, March 1, 2023 A bumper data dump on Wednesday kicks off the new trading month in Asia, with China's manufacturing PMI report for February and fourth quarter Australian GDP among the most important releases for investors.      Market sentiment going into these and a host of other numbers from across the continent is likely to be fairly neutral after Wall Street closed February with a lackluster performance on Tuesday.     To recap, the S&P 500 closed February down 2.6% and the Nasdaq lost 1%, but that wasn't bad - the MSCI World Index fell 3% and MSCI Asia ex-Japan lost 7%, erasing almost all of January's gains.
